Public Records Search Guide

Your comprehensive guide to searching, requesting, and accessing public law enforcement records — including police reports, arrest logs, court records, and agency documents.

Your Legal Right

What Are Public Records?

Public records are documents and data created or held by government agencies that are available to the public under law. The federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and corresponding state sunshine laws give every US citizen the legal right to request and obtain government records.

Key Principle: You do not need to state a reason for your public records request in most states. The burden is on the government to justify withholding, not on you to justify your request.
